The moon was high, floating in the sky. He looked down at the trees and let out a sigh. 'Oh me, oh my!' he said with a frown, 'Why must I wear this sad, gloomy crown?'
His face was round, with a mouth so wide, It seemed that nothing could make him feel pride. 'Why am I here, so big and so bright? I wish I was beautiful in the night.'

Just then, a little mouse came scurrying near. He looked at the moon and said, 'What do I hear? Why are you sad, my friend in the sky? With your shining light, you make the night fly!'

The moon replied, with a tear in his eye, 'I'm big and I'm bright, but I'm not sweet and spry. My mouth is so big, how can I be grand? I'm just the sad moon who shines on the land.'

Then came a monkey, swinging through the trees. 'What’s wrong, dear moon? Why the long face, please? You shine so bright, spreading light all around. You make us feel happy, oh look at us bound!'

The moon looked confused, could it really be true? Could he be lovely for all that he’d do? 'But I’m big,' he said, with a shiver of doubt. 'And my mouth is so wide, it feels more like a pout.'

The mouse squeaked up, with a cheerful little dance, 'You shine like the stars, giving us all a chance! Your smile is so bright, it lights up the night! It's not about beauty, it's about your pure light.'
